A Pre-Christmas treat: Oliver!

Wednesday, 23 December 2015

So this Christmas, me and my little sister were fortunate enough to go and see a show. My lovely Nan had bought us tickets to go and see Oliver! at the Curve Theatre, in Leicester. I hadn't been to the Curve in a long time, not since I was a part of their Young Company so it was real treat to be a part of the audience.

I'm a massive fan of the Curve and how they create their own productions, they're all so fabulously directed and their staging is always brilliant. They definitely give the West End a run for their money, with the addition of the promotion local talent. If you ever get time to catch a show, The Curve is definitely the place to go in the East Midlands.

I was delighted to find out the cast of the Dickens classic, with Cat Simmons playing Nancy (until Jan 2nd) and the wonderful actor Oliver Boot playing the villain Bill Sikes. I'd recently seen Boot in Richard II at The Globe Theatre, needless to say he was brilliant. I was defintely excited to see his portrayal of this classic dark character.

If I had one word to sum up the show? Impressive.

Impressive from the quality of acting, right from the young orphans to the seasoned professionals. Impressive from a staging perspective, lots of lavish designs which are a real treat for the audience. It amazes me how this production stand the test of time, and the humour is still so hugely relevant to today.

It was lovely to see such young actors hold their own on a professional stage, with endearing vocals from Oliver (Albert Hart) and a cheeky, vibrant performance from Dodger (Kwame Kanderkore). I have to say, Fagin (Peter Poly Carpou) gave a stand out performance, and was definitely a hit with even the youngsters in the audience. The performance was bursting with energy from all cast members, and was a real treat getting us into the Christmas spirit. As a musical theatre enthusiast this show was never going to disappoint.

If you have chance to catch the show, I'd highly recommend, but be fast it's on till Jan 23rd.
